There’s something aggravating about the effort a small business puts into making their Facebook Page look professional, only to have Facebook change all of the parameters as soon as everything is in place. If you’ve been in business for a while and have always kept your Facebook Page looking sharp then you have had to change it repeatedly. If you have a friendly graphic designer / webmaster / social media guru do it for you then you’ve laid out some cash time and time again only to have Facebook seem to laugh in your face.
Remember just a few years back when everyone had crazy big custom pages and you had to click Like on the page before you could get to the meat and potatoes of that company’s Facebook offering? There were two rows of “tabs” when you did get to the real page and those did a variety of things. Suddenly Facebook deprecated all of those custom pages in favor of just allowing the tabs to help you interact with a customer. Then the second row of tabs disappeared and suddenly the top banner got skinnier. Now pages are coming back and tabs are going away.
Believe it or not, this is all done for a reason other than to annoy small business owners. The first change where the crazy custom pages went away was due to the total inconsistency from one page to another. Facebook likes consistency. The second change when the tabs started going away was because users said they did not like the tabs. Companies agreed with users and said that no one was using the tabs. Now many of the changes are meant to allow businesses a little more flexibility but most importantly to make sure all pages fit a mobile platform. Facebook is embracing mobile in a big way.
What does this mean to you, the business owner? Annoying or not most of the changes have been done to enhance or respond to user preferences. You want the users to be happy. They are your potential customers. You want the page to work on a mobile platform because more and more people use their phone or tablet instead of a full computer.
